March 7th is our 3rd annual AKICEBUM Memorial WOD

Tongass Fitness was founded in 2016 by Ryan Johnson and Logan Lott (that’s me). It’s hard to believe, but Tongass Fitness is entering its fourth year! Our little gym has grown so much since its inception. What began as a disjointed, jumble of notes in Ryan’s notebook blossomed into a full gym in less than a year’s time. We began with one boat condo, slapped it with green paint, and outfitted it with a Rogue Monster rig and a few weights. After more than a year of growth, we doubled the physical space of our gym by conjoining it to the neighboring unit.

It all started with an empty boat condo

Shortly after this expansion, our community suffered a tragic loss when Ryan lost his life in a mountain climbing expedition in the Mendenhall Towers. Since this event, we have held a memorial WOD for Ryan. The upcoming event, AKICEBUM, will be our third time holding this event, and will take place March 7.

AKICEBUM is an 18 minute AMRAP of:

  • 6 Pull-Ups
  • 9 Power Snatch (75/55)
  • 10 Wall Balls (20/14)

Each number in the workout holds special significance.

18 was the year in which he climbed The Towers. The 6-9-10 rep scheme is for the elevation of the peak. 34 was Ryan’s age at the time of his last ascent.

This upcoming AKICEBUM event will be open to members and non-members alike. There is no cost to participate but it is encouraged to make a donation for Ryan’s son, Milo. We’ll be supplying post-workout burritos (Ryan’s favorite) and everyone is free to socialize afterwards, and cheer others on as they complete the memorial workout.

Tongass is finally spreading to its upstairs area. Our flooring is in place. Next step is closing the gaps between the floor and the wall. It’s been a long time coming, but the patience of our members will be rewarded with a beautiful, open cardio & mobility suite. The plan currently involves spin bikes, SkiErgs, and perhaps a Curved Manual Treadmill (AirRunner).

In keeping with our philosophy, the space will retain an open atmosphere that we find reflects a true, Alaskan way of living. Alaskans value space. We’ll take ocean vistas, gargantuan mountain ranges, and deep valleys over the crush of city traffic, billboards, and skyscrapers. Similarly, it has always been in the Tongass philosophy to reflect this same environment. It’s too often that gym-goers in Juneau walk into a gym only to be caged in by outdated, non-functional equipment. Every piece of equipment in Tongass exists for a reason, can be incorporated into functional fitness, and maintains that liberating sense of openness.

Tracy deadlifting like a boss

Recently, we’ve added a new class called Nitro Lifting. This class has no cardio or met-con element built into it. It is an hour and half of strength work comprised of 2 primary lifts (Back Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press, or Strict Press) + a hypertrophy finisher from ThundrBros. The lifts are designed to be incorporated within our current WOD programming, which is designed by CompTrain. Nitro Lifting is perfect for those athletes that want more strength work, or who have not been able to attend regular classes. There’s no extra cost to our regular members. Soon, there will be a stand alone price for Nitro sessions for non-members as well.

2020 has already been a rush of awesome changes here at Tongass, and we can’t wait to show you what else is in store.
